Updated 2026.

The road from Kodai Road railway station to Kodaikanal is 80 km of ghat. Paved, two lanes in most places, takes 2.5–3 hours in normal conditions.

That's the part travel guides tell you. Here's what they usually leave out.

Night driving on the ghat

Avoid it if possible. The road surface is fine, but visibility drops fast after 7 PM — mist and fog in the upper section come without warning. Trucks coming downhill use the full lane on blind curves. If you're arriving late from Madurai or Coimbatore, consider stopping at Palani or Kodai Road town for the night and doing the climb in the morning.

Monsoon conditions (July–September)

The main ghat road stays open through most of monsoon. Landslides happen on forest-edge side roads, not typically on the main highway. PWD usually clears blockages within a few hours of them forming.

The Berijam Lake road (about 20 km from town) is the one to check — the Forest Department closes it during sustained heavy rain. Call ahead before making the trip.

Roads to Pillar Rocks and the southern viewpoints are paved but narrow. After overnight rain, they're slippery enough that auto drivers sometimes add a surcharge or simply won't go.

Peak season vehicle restrictions

The Tamil Nadu government has restricted certain vehicles during peak season in recent years. In 2025, light commercial vehicles needed a pass for entry during the flower show period. Rules change year to year — check with the Kodaikanal municipality or your hotel if you're arriving with a larger vehicle.

Fuel

There is a petrol bunk near the bus stand in town. Both petrol and diesel are available. Fill up before going to remote areas or starting the descent — there's nothing on the ghat road itself.

Two-wheelers

Bikes and scooters are rented on Club Road. Scooters cost ₹300–500/day, Activas around ₹800–1,200/day. Roads inside town are fine on two wheels. The ghat road itself is doable on a scooter but hard on the legs over 80 km.

In rain, the painted road markings on the ghat bends become slippery. Leave more braking distance than you think you need.
