Choosing a Family Stay in Kodaikanal
Most families who search for a room in Kodaikanal are really choosing between three things: being close to the lake, having enough space for everyone, and keeping the total cost reasonable. The table above shows the per-night range each owner gives, so you can see where a stay fits your budget before you message anyone.
Which area suits a family
Near the lake. Angel Villa is listed at about 500 m from Kodaikanal Lake, which means you can walk to the boating area and the main market. This saves time and cab fares when you are travelling with small children or grandparents.
Rifle Range Road and Naidupuram. Several stays here, including The Lake House, Pavi Resort, Ramesh Cottage and Orchard Villa, are listed at roughly 2.5 to 3 km from the lake and the bus stand. You get quieter surroundings and often larger rooms or a whole villa, but you will need a vehicle for most sightseeing. Check the parking line in the table first if you are driving up.
Near Bear Shola Falls. GSP Villa is listed about 2.4 km from the falls and 2.8 km from the lake, with mountain views and garden access.
What to check before you book
- Room type and bed count. A "family room" can mean two double beds or one large room with an extra mattress. Ask for the exact bed setup and whether extra beds cost more.
- Who is counted as a guest. Many owners count children above a certain age as adults. Ask the age limit.
- Hot water, heating and power backup. Evenings are cold in the hills. Hot water is listed for most of these stays, and The Lake House lists power backup.
- Parking distance. GSP Villa lists off-site parking. Ask how far it is from the room, especially with luggage and children.
- Food. Several homestays offer home-cooked meals. If you have young children, ask whether mild, non-spicy food can be prepared.
- Slopes and open edges. Many properties sit on slopes with balconies and gardens. Keep an eye on young children there.
When to go
April to June and December are peak months, and school holidays fill rooms early. The monsoon months of July to September usually have the lowest rates. September and October are quieter if you prefer fewer crowds. Whatever the month, ask the owner for the rate on your exact dates.
Planning the days
Bryant Park, Coaker's Walk and the lake are the easy days with kids. Pillar Rocks and Guna Caves are a short drive out, around 4 to 5 km from Angel Villa according to its listing. For more ideas, see our guide to Kodaikanal with kids.
